Post General Election blues

The General Election results for a hung parliament were announced on Thursday last week and we have been left with the "He loves me, he loves me not, he..." or the eternal (infernal!) triangle scenario.

Cameron and Clegg, or Clegg and whoever replaces Gordon Brown as the new Labour leader (current favourite is David Miliband) - which two will form the next UK Government?

Which ever pair agrees to work together - and this will depend upon the will of both political parties - they will be faced with a difficult and at times turbulent relationship as they put in place the economic austerity package required to significantly reduce our deficit.

David Cameron and Nick Clegg seemed to be edging closer towards securing a power sharing deal but the resignation of Gordon Brown on Monday has now thrown Labour's hat firmly into the ring and the Liberal Democrats are now locked in talks with both sides

What will all this mean for Wales? If it is a Lib-Dem /Conservative coalition of some sort it is likely to be a very difficult period for Wales. If a Lib-Dem/Labour coalition then the nationalist parties in both Wales and Scotland will have an important role to play - and they will want their 'pound of flesh', including a change to the way that the Central Government funds are allocated to Wales and Scotland

Whether it is a Tory/Lib-Dem coalition or Labour/Lib-Dem coalition, we are likely to hear an announcement very soon. Either way the public sector in Wales is in for a difficult 5 years

What does all this mean for SME's in Wales?
Will interest rates rise?
Will VAT go up and have an impact on sales income?
If sterling strengthens will this reduce our competitive export advantage?
Will we be faced by compromises and policy fudging which may fail to achieve what is needed?
Interesting times. What do you see as the advantages/disadvantages of the coalition options?
